Local Sports For Wednesday August 7

A pair of player acquired in a recent trade with Portage of the Manitoba junior league have been inked by the Fort Frances Lakers.

Twin brothers Bryce and Lydon Lipinski will join the Lakers when they open training camp at the end of the month.

Lakers coaching staff feel the pair of 20-year-olds will be valuable both on and off the ice for leadership and guidance of their younger players.



Laureen Peters provided all the scoring as Boston Pizza edged the La Place Rendez-Vous Voyageurs 3-2.

The win B-P into a tie for first with the Voyageurs in the women's division of the Borderland Soccer League with both teams having one game to play.

Jess Caul scored for the Voyageurs with other goal credited as an own goal against Boston.

The other match up saw Al's Racquet Stringing and Taggs Source for Sports play to a 4-4 draw.

Sara Kellar had 3 goals for Al's.

Myla Angus had the other for Al's.

Scoring for Taggs were Sara Roach, Tara MacEachern, Liz Morrisseau and Wynonna Kavanaugh.



A regional girls hockey team was victorious at the USA International Hockey Cup tournament in Blaine, Minnesota on the weekend.

An under 12 team, playing at the Thunder Bolts took the division, going 5-0 along the way, outscoring their opponents 36-3.

The team was made up of girls from the Fort Frances, Dryden, Thunder Bay and Kenora areas.
