Local Sports For Wednesday July 31

First round of the Rainy River District Fastball League playoffs opened with at least one upset.

11th seeded Northwest Bay beat the number 6 seed Rainy River 16-10.

The Chieftans had won just five games during the regular season.

Elsewhere Stratton advanced with a 10-2 win over the Sabaskong Cubs.

Manitou got by the Sabaskong Lakers 6-1.

Sight and Sound defeated Dawson 9-4.

Big Island beat the Couchiching Raiders 11-7.



Three goals from Laureen Peters helped Boston Pizza to a 5-4 win over the La Place Rendez-Vous Voyageurs in a women's division game of the Borderland Soccer League.

It's the Voyageurs first loss.

Caitlin Sande and Mel Hyatt had the other goals for BP.

Angela Cole with a pair, Jessica Caul and Sydney Radigan replied for the Voyageurs.

In the other game, Taggs Source for Sports defeated Al's Racquet Stringing 7-2

Courtney Roach, Sara Roach, Heather Wright, Wynonna Kavanaugh, Tara MacEachern, Eizabeth Morrisseau and Meghan Metke scored for Taggs.

Carla Penner had both goals for Al's.



Men's soccer continues in the Borderland Soccer League tonight.

Pharmasave faces International Travel Services.

La Place Rendez-Vous Voyageurs is up against Senior Pharmasave.




Registration is now being accepted for an upcoming aquathon in Fort Frances.

The September 8 event includes a 750 metre swim and a 5 kilometre run starting at Pither's Point Park.

Cost is 25 a person or 30 dollars for a team.

Golfers are wanted for an upcoming fundraiser in support of the Falls High School golf program.

The Broncos golf scramble takes place August 16 at the Falls Country Club.

It's 35 dollars to take place.
