Local Sports For Wednesday February 5

Jarred Taylor scored three times as the Fort Frances Muskies boys hockey team defeated Red Lake 11-5.

Aaron McDowell, David Pryde and Graeham Kitt each scored twice.

Tyler Vanuden and Josh Gouin added singles.



Shelby Tymkin notched a hat trick as the Muskies girls hockey team blanked Kenora's Thomas Aquanis 8-0.

Hailey Clendenning and Kaily Greengass each had a pair.

Amy Penner scored the other.



A four-goal performance from Luke Spilde led the International Falls Broncos boys hockey team to a 5-1 win over Lake of the Woods.

Brady Walls had the other Broncos goal.



Fort Frances Muskies court teams earned a split with Dryden in their final NorWossa league games.

The junior boys basketball team defeated the Eagles 63-24, while the senior boys lost 96-91 in a thrilling overtime.

In girls volleyball, it was the juniors again coming out victorious with a three-set win over Dryden.

The seniors lost in three.

Playoffs take place a week from tomorrow in Fort Frances.



Stratton's Trevor Bonot and Devlin's Mike Badiuk among participants at the Northern Ontario men's curling playdowns getting underway this afternoon in Timmins.

Despite losing out in the west qualifier in Fort Frances, Bonot's Thunder Bay rink earned a spot after winning the east qualifier a week ago.

Badiuk plays vice for Thunder Bay's Dylan Johnston who won one of the spots in the Fort Frances event.



International Falls Broncos girls hockey team opens play in the Section 7AA championship with a home game against Silver Bay.

The Broncos are ranked number one after finishing with a 14 and 4 record.

Game time at Broncos arena is 7 p.m.



Rainy River Voyageurs basketball teams are at home to Itasca.

The women play at 6 p.m., followed by the men at 8 p.m.



A number of medals for Atikokan skiers at the NorWOSSA Ski Championship held in Atikokan on Monday.

Grant Legaree took first in the junior boys race while Kiara Gannon claimed top honours in the senior girls event.

Kelvyn Vos was third in the Grade 7 and 8 boys event.

Reisha Vos was second while Emma Campanaro was third in the junior girls race.

Joe Anthony took home third in the senior boys event, three second ahead of fellow Atikokan skier Bailey Morgan.



It's week two of the Borderland Women's Indoor Soccer League.

Last week's opening winners, Cater 2 U Queens and the Main Street Mayhem tangle tonight.

Boston Pizza Ball Blasters and Wright Physiotherapy Rockettes meet in the second game.
