Local Sports For Friday January 31

Mixed results for two Fort Frances curling rinks at the Northern Ontario bantam curling championships.

Chris Silver's rink opened with a 6-3 win over Thessalon, but fell 12-3 to Felix LaSalle of Timmins in the evening draw.

On the girls side, Hailey Beaudry's rink is also one and one with an opening 9-2 win over Cassidy Romyn of Sioux Lookout and a 6-5 loss to Calli Barclay of North Bay.

Play continues this morning.



A pair of lopsided wins for the Fort Frances Muskies hockey teams over Sioux Lookout.

The boys hockey team won 11-1.

They're in Red Lake tonight and tomorrow.

The girls team beat the Warriors 12-1.

Shelby Tymkin had 5-goals in the game.

Amy Penner notched a hat trick.



International Falls Broncos girls hockey team ended its regular season with a 3-2 win over Evelth-Gilbert.

Hillary Fox, Lexi Edwards, and Amber Tilander with the goals.

The Bronco now await their seeding for the playoffs.

Luke Spilde scored the game's only goals as the boys team beat Hibbing 1-0.

Wyatt Ulrich stopped 39 shots for the shut out.



On the court, the International Falls Broncos boys basketball team defeated Warroad 64-53.

Ben Humbert with  26 points.

The girls team beat Mesabi East 50-49.



Three of four scores to pass on from games involving the Fort Frances Muskies boys basketball and girls volleyball teams in Kenora.

The senior boys basketball team beat Kenora 65-22.

The junior boys lost 53-37.

The senior girls volleyball team scored a three-set sweep over Beaver Brae.

Chris Silver and Hailey Beaudry both suffered losses this morning to drop them to one and two records.

Silver's rink next faces Sam Cull of Sudbury.

Beaudry's foursome plays Katie Rutledge of Sault Ste. Marie.



The top of the standings in the Fort Frances Women's Volleyball League has gotten a little tighter.

Alliance earned 5 points last night to remain in first.

A pair of wins by Sacred Hitless moved them into a second place tie with Gillon's Cougars with both teams 2 points back of first.

Notorious D I G also scored a pair of victories to take over fourth spot in the standing.



Fort Frances Lakers are back on home ice for a pair of game this weekend.

The host the Thunder Bay North Stars tonight before taking on the English River Miners tomorrow.



Fort Frances Muskies boys hockey team continues play on the road with a pair of games in Red Lake tonight and tomorrow.



Fort Frances Canadian midget AA in tournament play again this weekend.

They're taking part in an event in Duluth.



Twelve members of the Fort Frances Aquanauts are in Thunder Bay this weekend to attend a regional swim meet.

They'll be up against the top swimmers from across the northwestern Ontario.
